1962. La course vers l’espace est lancée. Déjà fournisseur de l’aviation civile et militaire, Breitling s’intéresse de près à cette nouvelle aventure humaine. Sur la base du chronographe Navitimer, les techniciens de la firme développent la Cosmonaute, une version «spatiale» de cet instrument indiquant les 24 heures du jour sur un seul tour de cadran. La notion de jour et de nuit étant très relative dans l’espace, cette configuration devait permettre de ne pas confondre midi et minuit. Le 24 mai 1962, l’astronaute Scott Carpenter testera cet instrument en conditions réelles lors de son vol orbital à bord de la capsule Aurora 7.
Pour marquer son 125e anniversaire, Breitling a choisi d’éditer une série limitée du modèle qui fut le premier chronographe-bracelet à voyager dans l’espace. Seuls 1000 exemplaires de cette Cosmonaute seront produits, tous dotés pour l’occasion d’une version inédite de l’intrigant cadran à affichage 24 heures. Pour mieux se distinguer, la Cosmonaute Limited Edition est équipée exclusivement du bracelet Air Racer, un bracelet rigide à trous, hommage à une icône du design moderne des années 1960.

1962. The space race was well under way. Already a supplier to civilian and military aviation, Breitling naturally took a keen interest in this new human adventure. Based on the Navitimer chronograph, the brand’s technicians developed the Cosmonaute, a space-going version of this instrument indicating the daily 24 hours in a single sweep of the dial. Given the extremely relative nature of day and night in space, this configuration prevents possible confusion between midday and midnight. On May 24th 1962, the astronaut Scott Carpenter tested this instrument under real-life conditions during his orbital flight aboard the Aurora 7 capsule.
For its 125th anniversary, Breitling has chosen to issue a limited series of the model that became the first wrist chronograph to experience space travel. Only 1,000 of these Cosmonaute watches will be produced, all equipped for the occasion with an original version of the intriguing 24-hour dial. icon from the 1960s, the Cosmonaute Limited Edition is fitted exclusively with the rigid perforated Air Racer bracelet.
