When we met Jean-François Ruchonnet

JFR+TB

Bonne nuit !

In the watchmaking world there are traditionalists and free spirits . Jean-François Ruchonnet is from the second category and he revolutionizes the watchmaking with big blow of patents registration. Contrary to those who dream their life, he prefers living his dreams. A beautiful mix between watchmaking and engineering, his second passion, gave birth to Cabestan. The model Winch Tourbillon Vertical made the young watchmaking brand part of the watch collectors club.
And who could really talk about Jean-François Ruchonnet if it’s not himself?

TH: According to your words, who is Mr Jean François Ruchonnet?
JFR: A passionate, agitator, and perfectionist person. For 25 years I have been in the world of watchmaking and I have the reputation to be never at a loss for something to say nor stonewalling! This characteristic can offend Personally I think it’s a quality. It motivates my creativity. What urges me to do better? I love to meet challenges!

TH: what does Cabestan represent for you?
JFR: The outcome of a dream, that combines two worlds which fascinate me: the art and the engineering. Cabestan Winch Vertical Tourbillon integrates an incredible technological exploit into an object of a big aesthetic purity. I enjoy the fact that in the environment of watch collectors, one describes this guard-time as a work of art. My goal has been reached.

TH: What did you feel during the results of Only Watch 09?
JFR: A great pride, in many aspects. The fact that a very young independent brand of Haute Horlogerie arrives at the top of one of the most famous watchmaking auctions is extraordinary! As for creativity, the future of the Haute Horlogerie is clearly in the independence. I am also very proud that the amount of money reached by Cabestan is entirely dedicated to the fight against the Duchenne’s Myopathy. Charity means a lot to me.

TH: What was the motivation concerning the sale of Cabestan to Mr Timothy Bovard?
JFR: To satisfy one’s ambition in innovating. A watchmaking company needs a lot of financial means and real skills in management and watchmaking conception. Meeting Timothy was decisive on this aspect. Since the first time we met, we have shared the same vision about a company focussed on an extreme creativity, audacious designs and the fulfilment of our ultra-exclusive customers’ dream. Timothy’s talent is famous in the business world, particularly in repurchasing companies. This partnership is completely ideal.

TH: What role will you play in this new association?
JFR: As the management company is in the hands of Timothy, I’ll be able to concentrate on what I love and do the best: creativity. This freedom is more and more rare in our profession.

TH: Tell us more about this famous “disc break system”!
JFR: It is about a system of micro-hydraulics coupled with disc break system, as in a car, which makes it possible to stop the tourbillon which runs at 21 ‘ 600 vibrations per hour in normal mode, and to start the second tourbillon which runs at 36 ‘ 000 vibrations per hour in timing mode. The whole is controlled by pressing on one of the Cabestan and allows the user to make function the Cabestan in stopwatch mode with a maximum of precision while saving energy in normal mode. For this invention, I obviously deposited a patent.

TH: Will the design evaluate in the forthcoming models?
JFR: In fact ideas do not miss! I have enough ideas in my head that can fulfill the Brand Cabestan for the next 5 years with dreams. They can even make hallucinating the watch collectors. However, we want to make the brand progress intelligently, by offering real innovations and not only cosmetic.

TH: How do you see the future of the watchmaking industry and in which part of the world do you think it will be in the short run?
JFR: I am not fortune teller, but I can see rather clearly that for the very Haute Horlogerie industry, the future is indeed in the past. The financial crisis set the record straight. Buyers of exceptional items want authenticity. We have a watch which is entirely designed by our company, with our own movement and is also entirely manufactured in our factory, by the watchmaker master Eric Coudray and his team made of talented watchmakers. Everything is made by hand. Everything is carefully done. I am convinced that these old values, these artisans’ values, are what will define real luxury in the forthcoming years everywhere in the world.

TH: Finally, are you still insomniac?
JFR: Let’s see… it is currently 3:12 a.m. Indeed, it’s time to go to bed!! Good night!
