Daniel Roth présente ENDURER, son tout nouveau modèle, qui constitue une petite révolution dans le design des collections de la marque sans renier pour autant son appartenance à la forme emblématique des boîtes qui en a fait le renom.

ENDURER: force et séduction.
ENDURER porte bien son nom et ne cache rien de sa force de caractère ni de sa détermination à plaire. Sur une scène horlogère où extravagance et ultra-complications sont de mise, Daniel Roth répond par la maîtrise de la tradition classique et sport pour tout un chacun. Si un regard sur le nouveau garde-temps Daniel Roth suffit à en apprécier la masculinité, il convient toutefois de s’attarder un peu sur les détails pour percevoir l’origine de sa création. Car si l’homme est au coeur de sa vocation – il a bel et bien été dessiné pour un poignet masculin -, son design puise son inspiration ailleurs.

Force tranquille et respect des valeurs
Au pays de soleil levant, la plus ancienne et la plus populaire des disciplines modernes des budō (arts martiaux) est le kendo. Le masque du kendoka, couvrant visage et tête, épaules et gorge, est pourvu d’une grille métallique de treize à quinze barres suivant la taille. A l’image de cet art martial dont il tire son inspiration, le design puissant d’ENDURER traduit bien, et au premier coup d’oeil, des valeurs telles que ténacité et robustesse, force et endurance. Et, à l’image du kendoka, qui se distingue par sa force tant physique que mentale, ENDURER a été conçu pour durer…

Un design empreint de symbolisme
L’affichage est extrêmement pur, rendant la lecture des informations extrêmement claire: les chiffres ont été remplacés par des index lumineux, séparés par la minuterie et semblant reposer sur un second cercle à l’intérieur duquel se trouve le guichet de la grande date. A 6h, contrastant avec le reste du cadran par la présence de chiffres arabes, le compteur de la fonction Chrono sprint.

Pour être nouveau, ENDURER n’en respecte pas moins l’une des composantes essentielles et visibles de l’ADN de la marque: le design emblématique de la boîte à double ellipse. D’une dimension généreuse de 41×44 mm, étanche à 10 atm, elle est fabriquée en acier traité noir spécial à base de carbure de titane BlackTich ou en Marine Steel 4435 Staybrite, acier spécial présentant une résistance accrue à la corrosion. D’une conception plus massive, son orientation plus sportive n’est cependant pas exempte d’un attrait qui séduit d’emblée: la douceur. Par exemple, les angles ont été cassés et polis afin de donner davantage de lumière à la montre. En outre, il suffit d’admirer la montre de profil à 6h pour découvrir des courbes surprenantes: la lunette concave, ornée de six vis et dotée d’une glace convexe, se termine de chaque côté, à 3h et à 9h, par une forme elle aussi concave, un peu comme si la boîte portait encore l’empreinte des pouces du maître horloger qui l’a façonnée. A 7h30 se trouve le bouton-poussoir de la fonction Chrono sprint, dont le design à ondulation permet une prise plus efficace et s’inscrit dans la logique du cadran et du bracelet. Les finitions ne sont pas en reste puisque les deux glaces sont traitées antireflet face et fond. La couronne est frappée du logo à trois branches, rappel de l’aiguille des secondes, emblématique de la marque.

Le mouvement exclusif à remontage automatique DR 1306 bat au rythme de 28’800 alternances par heure. Il affiche heures et minutes sur un axe légèrement excentré, et grande date à 12h. Cette dernière, dont le mécanisme est breveté, bénéficie d’une construction spécifique plus grande que la plupart de ses concurrentes sur le marché. Grâce à ce décentrage des fonctions heures-minutes, le compteur de la fonction Chrono sprint, positionné à 6h, a la part belle. Rare dans la haute horlogerie, cette “complication simple” mais utile consiste en un chronographe simplifié permettant de mesurer de longs laps de temps. En effet, elle indique les heures et les minutes au moyen de deux aiguilles montées sur un seul axe. Une pression sur le bouton-poussoir à 7h30 enclenche le positionnement des aiguilles sur 12h ainsi que le départ du chronographe.

Détail non négligeable, la masculinité de la montre tient aussi au design de son bracelet, orné de trois crêtes qui confèrent à l’ensemble son originalité. Mais cette masculinité n’est, là non plus, pas exempte de douceur, car ce motif à vague est une discrète évocation de la trace du râteau sur le sable d’un jardin sec japonais… ou de celle des doigts de l’artisan horloger. Disponible en cuir de veau et équipé d’une boucle ardillon frappée du logo Daniel Roth, le bracelet est cousu main ton sur ton.

ENDURER en bref…
ENDURER, la “deuxième” Daniel Roth, revêt une forme plus masculine et sportive que les autres modèles de la marque. La puissance de son design tient à un subtil mélange de force et de douceur, de respect d’un ADN établi et d’exploration d’autres codes. Tirant son inspiration du masque du kendoka, dont elle emprunte le dessin, ENDURER frappe d’emblée par les lignes horizontales ornant le cadran et se poursuivant sur le bracelet. Outre sa grande date brevetée, le cadran affiche une “complication utile” pour mesurer les longs laps de temps: le Chrono sprint. Parions qu’ENRURER marquera durablement les amateurs de haute horlogerie de caractère.

ENDURER lives up to its name and hides nothing of its strength of character, nor its determination to please. On a watchmaking scene where extravagance and extreme complexity are the name of the game, Daniel Roth responds by displaying its mastery of classic and sporting traditional watches addressed to a broad audience. While a first glimpse at the new Daniel Roth timepiece is enough to appreciate its virile nature, it is well worth taking a closer look at the details in order to perceive the origins of its creation. For while men are indeed at the heart of its vocation – it was definitely designed for the masculine wrist – its design draws its inspiration from another source.

Quiet strength and respect for authentic values
In the land of the rising sun, kendo is the oldest and most popular of the modern martial arts. The kendoka’s mask, covering the face, head, shoulders and torso, is fitted with a metal grid composed of 13 to 15 bars depending on its size. Like the discipline that inspired it, the powerful design of ENDURER admirably expresses a set of values such as tenacity, sturdiness, strength and endurance. And like the kendoka, who is distinguished by its blend of physical and mental strength, ENDURER has been built to last.

A design imbued with potent symbolism
The extremely pure display ensures extremely clear read-off of the information: the numerals are replaced by luminous markers separated by the minute circle and appearing to rest on a second circle hosting the large date display. Contrasting with the rest of the dial by its Arabic numerals, the Chrono spring function appears at 6 o’clock.

While undeniably new, ENDURER nonetheless respects one of the essential and most visible features of the brand’s genetic heritage: the emblematic design of the double ellipse case. Generously sized at 41 x 44 mm and water resistant to 10 atm, it is made from steel with a black coating based on BlackTich titanium carbide, or from Marine Steel 4435 Staybrite – a special grade of steel boasting enhanced corrosion resistance. While distinctly larger and sportier, it nonetheless radiates an immediately appealing trait of character: gentleness. For example, the angles have been cut and polished to create a more luminous effect. Moreover, one need only admire the watch from the 6 o’clock side to discover a set of surprising curves: the concave bezel, adorned with six screws and fitted with a convex glass, adopts an equally concave shape at 3 and 9 o’clock – almost as if the case bore the thumbprint of the master-watchmaker who fashioned it. The Chrono sprint function push-button located between 7 and 8 o’clock features a ridged design ensuring a firmer grip and entirely in harmony with the dial and strap. The finishing touches are on a par with this overall aura of quality, since the two watch glasses are glareproofed on both sides. The crown is stamped with the three-arm logo evoking the brand’s iconic seconds hand.

The exclusive self-winding DR 1306 movement beats to the cadence of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It displays the hours and minutes on a slightly off-centred axis, and the large date through a window at 12 o’clock. Based on a patented mechanism, the latter boasts a dedicated design significantly larger than its competitors. The offset position of the hour and minute functions gives pride of place to the Chrono sprint function at 6 o’clock. A rarity in the field of fine watchmaking, this “simple” but useful complication consists in a simplified chronograph mechanism serving to measure long periods of time. It does this by indicating hours and minutes by means of two hands mounted on a single axis. A single press on the pushbutton at 7.30 positions the hand at 12 o’clock and starts the chronograph.

Another unusual detail relates to the fact that the virile appeal of this watch also stems from the design of its wristband, featuring three ridges lending an extremely original touch to the overall design. But here again, this masculinity is not exempt from a certain softness, since this wave motif is discreetly reminiscent of the traces left by a rake on the sand of a Japanese dry garden… or by the fingers of the watchmaking artisan. Available in calfskin and equipped with a pin buckle bearing the Daniel Roth logo, the strap is stitched with tone-on-tone seams.

ENDURER in an nutshell…
ENDURER, the “second” Daniel Roth, radiates a more masculine and sporting appearance than the brand’s other models. The power of its design lies in a subtle blend of strength and gentleness, combining respect for an established DNA with an exploration of other design codes. Inspired by and shaped like a kendoka’s protective mask, ENDURER immediately catches the gaze with the horizontal lines adorning the dial and extending onto the strap. In addition to its patented large date indication, the dial displays a “useful complication” designed to measure long periods of time: the Chrono sprint. One can safely bet that ENDURER will make a lasting impression on enthusiasts of fine watches endowed with distinctive character.
